Antique Niello Work Brass Planter with Red Enamel Highlights

A brief history,
"Niello work" refers to an ancient metalworking technique using a black sulfide alloy (made from sulfur, silver, copper, lead) inlaid into engraved designs on silver or gold, creating high-contrast, durable decoration for jewelry and artifacts, with notable historical peaks in Roman, Byzantine, Renaissance Italy, and Tula, Russia, plus modern production in Thailand and Iraq. It's a process of etching metal, filling lines with the black mixture, heating, then polishing, resulting in distinct dark patterns.  Used since ancient times (Bronze Age Syria, Rome, Byzantium), peaked in 15th-century Italy, revived in 18th-century Russia (Tula work).
Modern Production: Became popular for mass-produced jewelry (often stamped "Siam" or "Thailand") from the 1950s-80s and by Iraqi silversmiths.
